Ethical Boundaries for Digital Engagement
Social Media Policy
A Note on Social Media and Mental Health Care: The use of social media in the context of mental health and addiction services requires careful, ethics-driven attention to professional boundaries, client confidentiality, and the nature of the therapeutic relationship. This policy is designed to protect you, maintain professional integrity, and set clear expectations for how we engage online. Please read it carefully.

Social Media Does Not Establish a Professional Relationship
CRITICAL: Following, liking, commenting on, sharing, or otherwise engaging with our social media content does NOT establish a therapist-client, counselor-client, or coaching relationship of any kind. Comments, direct messages, or replies on social media platforms do not constitute therapy, counseling, crisis intervention, or professional advice. Do not share sensitive mental health or personal information via social media channels.
Social media engagement โ whether by commenting on our posts, responding to a story, participating in a poll, or sending a direct message โ is a form of public or semi-public communication and is not appropriate for the discussion of clinical concerns, symptoms, personal crises, treatment history, or any matter that would normally be addressed in a confidential clinical setting.
To initiate services or discuss clinical matters, please contact us using our secure, encrypted practice communication channels:
- ๐ง Secure email: RTRCounseling@proton.me
- ๐ Phone: +1 (612) 405-9644

Client Confidentiality & Social Media
We Will Never Identify Clients on Social Media
The Practice will never identify, acknowledge, confirm, tag, mention, quote, or otherwise disclose any information about a current or former client on any social media platform. This prohibition applies even if a client has publicly identified themselves as a client of the Practice, and even if the client requests or consents to such identification in a social media context.
If a current or former client mentions their work with the Practice in a public post or comment, we will not respond to or engage with that post in a way that confirms or denies the existence of a professional relationship.
Testimonials and Success Stories
Any testimonials, success stories, or case examples shared by the Practice on social media or the website are provided with explicit written informed consent from the client and have been reviewed to ensure no identifying information is disclosed. Clients are never pressured to provide testimonials. Substance use disorder treatment client testimonials require specific written consent consistent with 42 C.F.R. Part 2 and may not be solicited or coerced.
What Clients Should Know About Social Media Confidentiality
Clients are encouraged to be thoughtful about what they share publicly. If you choose to publicly disclose your therapeutic relationship with Reset. Transform. RISE!ยฎ, that is your right; however, please understand:
- We may not be able to acknowledge or respond to your public post due to our ethical confidentiality obligations
- Public disclosure of your own treatment is entirely your choice, but we cannot guarantee how such disclosures will be received by others
- For substance use disorder treatment clients: you have enhanced federal privacy protections under 42 C.F.R. Part 2, and public disclosure waives certain protections only for what you personally disclose
Friend Requests, Follower Requests & Connections
Our Policy on Client Connection Requests
To protect your confidentiality, maintain professional boundaries, and uphold ethical standards, the Practice owner will not accept friend requests, follow requests, or professional connections from current or former clients on personal social media profiles (e.g., personal Facebook, personal Instagram, personal LinkedIn).
This is not a personal rejection. It is a professional and ethical boundary designed to:
- Protect your privacy and prevent inadvertent disclosure of your participation in services
- Maintain clear professional boundaries consistent with NASW, ACA, and NAADAC ethics codes
- Prevent the blurring of the professional relationship into a social relationship
- Avoid creating a dual relationship that could compromise the integrity of treatment
Business Page Following is Welcome
Following or liking the official business pages of Reset. Transform. RISE!ยฎ on any platform is acceptable and welcomed. Engagement with educational or inspirational content on our business pages is appropriate and does not raise boundary concerns. Please be mindful that your public engagement (likes, shares, comments) may be visible to others in your network.
What if We Are Mutual Connections?
If you and the Practice owner are already connected on social media prior to the initiation of a professional relationship, this pre-existing connection will be discussed during the intake process to assess whether it poses any conflict with the therapeutic relationship. In some cases, it may be appropriate to disconnect; in others, existing connections may be managed with clear discussion and mutual agreement.
Online Reviews & Testimonials
Your Right to Leave Reviews
You have the right to share your experience with the Practice on review platforms (Google, Yelp, Psychology Today, etc.). We do not pressure clients to leave reviews, and we will not solicit reviews in a manner that compromises your privacy or creates a coercive dynamic in the therapeutic relationship.
Our Response to Reviews
To protect the privacy of individuals who leave reviews, the Practice will not confirm, deny, or discuss any specific details of a professional relationship in responding to reviews. If we respond to a positive or negative review, our response will be general, professional, and will never disclose identifying clinical information.
Important: When you leave a review, you are publicly identifying yourself as a client or past client. This is your choice and your right. However, please be aware that once information is publicly posted, the Practice cannot protect that disclosure under HIPAA, though we will continue to protect all information held in your clinical record.
Negative Reviews
We take all feedback seriously. If you have a concern about your services, we encourage you to first address it directly with us at RTRCounseling@proton.me. We are committed to resolving concerns professionally and transparently.
Crisis Communication โ Social Media is NOT a Crisis Channel
โ ๏ธ IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS, DO NOT USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO CONTACT US.

Public Engagement Guidelines for Our Community
We welcome respectful, constructive engagement from our online community. Our social media spaces are intended to be safe, supportive, and informative environments. We ask all community members to:
- Treat all community members with dignity, compassion, and respect
- Keep personal disclosures to a level you are comfortable with in a public forum
- Refrain from sharing identifying information about yourself or others that you might later regret making public
- Recognize that other commenters are not licensed mental health professionals, and that peer support, while valuable, is not a substitute for professional care

- Use our pages for their intended purpose: community, education, and wellness support
Comments, Moderation & Content Removal
We value open dialogue but reserve the right to remove, hide, or report any comment or post that:

Tagging, Mentions & Sharing
Tagging Our Pages
You are welcome to tag our official business pages in posts that are consistent with our mission and values (e.g., sharing resources, community wellness content, or general referrals). We cannot guarantee we will respond to or share every tag.
Please Do Not Tag Your Therapist Personally
To protect both your privacy and our professional boundaries, please do not tag the personal social media profiles of Scott B. Foval or other Practice staff in posts that identify them as your therapist, counselor, or coach. If you wish to publicly share your experience, tagging our official business page is appropriate and preferred.
Sharing Our Content
We encourage sharing of our educational and wellness content, provided that: (a) the original attribution is maintained; (b) the content is not altered in a way that changes its meaning or accuracy; and (c) the content is not used for commercial purposes without written permission.
Direct Messages (DMs)
Direct Messages Are Not a Clinical Channel
Direct messages via social media platforms are not monitored in real time and are not appropriate for clinical communications. Please do not send the following via social media DMs:
- Crisis communications or expressions of suicidal or self-harm ideation
- Requests for clinical advice, medication guidance, or diagnostic information
- Protected health information (PHI) of any kind
- Session scheduling requests that cannot wait for secure contact
- Complaints about services (please use our secure email for these)
General Inquiries via DM
General inquiries such as questions about services, service area, or how to get started may be sent via DM, but please be aware: (a) we may not monitor DMs daily; (b) DMs are not encrypted and are subject to the privacy policies of the social media platform; and (c) you should not share any sensitive health information through these channels. For fastest response, contact us directly at RTRCounseling@proton.me or +1 (612) 405-9644.
HIPAA, Social Media & the Law
Social media use by healthcare providers is governed by HIPAA (45 C.F.R. Parts 160 & 164), Minnesota data privacy law (Minn. Stat. ยง 144.293), and professional ethics codes. Key legal obligations that shape our social media conduct include:
๐ Prohibition on Disclosing PHI
HIPAA prohibits the disclosure of PHI through social media without a valid patient authorization. Even "de-identified" cases shared publicly must meet the strict de-identification standards of 45 C.F.R. ยง 164.514. We do not share case information on social media.
๐ Platform Privacy Settings Are Insufficient
Social media platforms โ regardless of privacy settings โ are not HIPAA-compliant communication channels. We do not use social media to transmit or discuss any information that could constitute PHI, and we will redirect any such communication to secure channels.
โ๏ธ Minnesota Law Additional Protections
Minnesota's health records law (Minn. Stat. ยง 144.293) imposes additional protections beyond HIPAA. Mental health records and substance use disorder records receive heightened protection. Disclosure of such information via social media โ even unintentionally โ could constitute a violation of state law.
๐๏ธ Licensing Board Standards
The Minnesota BBHT expects all licensed professionals and pre-licensed practitioners under supervision to maintain professional standards in all digital and online activities. Ethical violations on social media may be reportable to the BBHT and could result in disciplinary action.
Ethical & Professional Standards
Our social media conduct is guided by the following professional standards:
- American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, Section H โ Distance Counseling, Technology, and Social Media
- NAADAC Code of Ethics โ Principle III: Client Welfare, including digital communications
- National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, Section 1.07 โ Privacy and Confidentiality
- Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy (BBHT) professional conduct standards
- International Coach Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics โ Sections governing confidentiality and boundaries
Dual Relationships
We are mindful of the risk of dual relationships โ situations in which a professional relationship between a clinician and client is combined with a personal or social relationship. Social media connections carry a risk of blurring these boundaries. Our policies on follower requests, content sharing, and direct messaging are designed to minimize this risk and protect the integrity of the professional relationship.
Minors on Social Media
Our social media channels are intended for audiences aged 18 and older. We do not intentionally collect information from, target content to, or engage in clinical-adjacent communications with individuals under the age of 18 through social media platforms.
If a minor is seeking services, the appropriate path is through our secure intake process with parental or guardian involvement as required by Minnesota law. Parents or guardians of minor clients should not reach out via social media on behalf of their minor child regarding clinical matters.
Policy Violations & Enforcement
Violations of this Social Media Policy โ including by clients, prospective clients, or members of the general public โ may result in:
- Removal of the offending content from our platforms
- Temporary or permanent blocking from our social media pages
- Reporting to the applicable social media platform for platform-level enforcement
- Where violations involve credible threats of violence, reporting to law enforcement
- For current clients: discussion of the violation and its clinical implications within the therapeutic relationship, and possible termination of services if continued engagement poses a risk to the safety of the professional relationship
Violations of HIPAA or Minnesota privacy law by the Practice will be addressed through our breach notification procedures and reported to the HHS Office for Civil Rights and/or Minnesota BBHT as required.
